Comments: A comprehensive range of adult and pediatric cardiac surgery is performed at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals including on and off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement and repair, LV aneurysm and reduction, aortic aneurysm and dissection, hypothermic circulatory arrest, arrhythmia ablation (Maze) procedures, cardiothoracic trauma, transplantation, and adult congenital heart repairs. Pediatric congenital heart surgery is particularly strong as our program has been a leading site for surgical correction of hypoplastic LV syndrome (Norwood procedure) for many years. The program is individually tailored to each fellow's specific interests and may include emphases on perioperative echocardiography, pediatric cardiac anesthesia, thoracic anesthesia, and cardiothoracic intensive care. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate directly in cardiothoracic surgery rotations with our surgeons. Cardiac anesthesia research is a major emphasis in our department (ranked 6th in NIH funding among anesthesia departments nationwide), and rotations in basic or clinical research may also be arranged depending on the fellow's interests and career goals.
