President's Message

Change and Opportunity

Portrait of Chris Troianos, MD

I am humbled and honored to have ascended to the role of President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists during the past Annual Meeting that took place in April in Orlando. Change always provides a great opportunity to focus on the mission and purpose of our society. We are an international organization of physicians that promotes excellence in patient care through education and research in perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures.

Our society is best recognized for the high-quality educational meetings that provide state-of-the-art information to enhance patient care, and this past meeting was certainly a testament to that recognition. It was well-attended, with 1457 participants from six continents representing 35 countries, and proved to be one of the best and highest quality educational offerings that I have experienced during my past 27 years of attending SCA meetings. It was particularly heartwarming to see so many early-career, fellow, and resident attendees presenting posters, participating in the Town Hall session, and taking advantage of the popular mentorship program organized by the society. The 450 fellows and residents that attended our meeting are the future of our specialty, and based on what I witnessed, our future is bright with great minds and enthusiastic learners.

This past meeting was our 39th Annual Meeting, and plans are already underway for the 40th Anniversary Annual Meeting, which will be a great celebration of our history, legacy, and future. Mark your calendars now: April 28–May 2, 2018, at the lovely JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. This is an incredible venue that we were fortunate to secure for our 40th Anniversary celebration. Plan your family trip to this sophisticated venue, complete with championship golf, a rejuvenating spa, multiple outdoor pools, a lazy river, and water slides. All of this with an outstanding educational offering featuring world-class speakers and panels. Put your requests in now at work to secure your time off to attend!

Did you know that SCA offers EIGHT educational offerings throughout the year in the form of face-to-face and online education? Besides our Annual Meeting, our in-person meetings include our Thoracic Anesthesia Symposium (recently held prior to our Annual Meeting), Echo Week (Comprehensive Review and Update of Perioperative Echocardiography), and, new this year, our Perioperative Ultrasound Hands-on Workshop (recently held prior to our 2017 Echo Week). Our digital education includes the iTeachU Perioperative Ultrasound Course, iTeachU Basic Perioperative TEE, Annual Meeting On Demand, and Echo Week On Demand.

During my service as your SCA President, I am joined on the SCA Executive Committee by Stan Shernan as President-Elect, Andy Shaw as Secretary/Treasurer, and Linda Shore-Lesserson as immediate Past-President. We and the entire SCA Board are committed to making your Society serve your needs in promoting excellence in patient care for your own patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures. Plans are underway to enhance our website to create a vehicle where we can provide online education beyond our face-to-face meetings through a variety of ways. Look for the launch of our new website this summer!

I really want to hear from you on how we can make your Society better in serving your needs and to utilize our new website and all of our educational venues to enhance your ability to take better care of your patients. In order to hear your voice, we have established a special way for you to share your input and ideas regarding the Society. This is a perfect time to share your ideas, as many fellows did during the Town Hall session held during the most recent Annual Meeting. I thank you in advance for your help in making the Society a great vehicle for you to help your patients through your own professional development and knowledge. Please send your ideas and feedback with a “Contact Chris” note to help our Society better serve you and our patients to President@scahq.org. I thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you!
