Description:
This is an in-person conference on perioperative echocardiography comprised of panels with lectures followed by question-and-answer discussion as well as live demonstrations and hands on experience for certain aspects of echocardiography, such advanced image acquisition and post-processing.
Educational Information
Physician Practice Gap:
There is a rapid advancement in the field of perioperative echocardiography which warrants ongoing annual CME products for utilization by cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiologists and sonographers. Ongoing development of technologies, most notably percutaneous approaches to structural heart disease, require the development and advancement of perioperative echocardiography in parallel.
Needs that Underlie the Gap
There is a need for development of cognitive and technical skills to appreciate the additional role of perioperative echocardiography as a diagnostic tool and procedural adjunct. In addition, there is a need for advanced 3D echocardiography and 3D echocardiography quantification to become part of routine perioperative echocardiography as well as a need to demonstrate the impact of collaborative communication based upon clinical case-based presentations across a multi-disciplinary medical specialty panel. Appreciation of the role of perioperative echocardiography as part of multi-modality imaging for percutaneous structural heart disease interventions is also needed.
DESIGNED to Change/Outcome: Following this activity, learners will develop competence by increasing their knowledge through a combination of hands-on learning, case-based presentations, and online lectures. Knowledge will be assessed with a pre-test and post-test.
The combination of in-person demonstrations, didactic lectures, case-based panel discussions and clinical dilemmas which demonstrate the broad clinical utility of perioperative echocardiography, participants will be able to improve on all the competencies mentioned above by gaining knowledge on new practice guidelines and new technologies, as well as observing and participating at discussions in multidisciplinary panels with case -based presentations.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- define the clinical application of two and three-dimensional (2D, 3D) echocardiographic imaging and use of Doppler principle to assess normal and abnormal cardiac states
- illustrate the normal and abnormal anatomy and function of the native and implanted valves using 2D/3D imaging and Doppler derived quantification
- illustrate the additive role of 3D echocardiography to perioperative decision-making
- demonstrate the integral role of echocardiography guided decision-making in complex surgery, percutaneous therapies, and clinical dilemmas
- discuss the multi-disciplinary applications of echocardiography in surgical and structural heart disease interventions
Satisfactory Completion
Learners must complete an evaluation form to receive a certificate of completion. Partial credit of individual sessions is not available.
