First Special Interest Group Created: Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (WICTA)
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) were created to allow interest groups to exist within the organizational structure of SCA. The first SIG was Women in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (WICTA). It was created to recruit, develop and promote women and underrepresented minority physicians as leaders in cardiothoracic anesthesiology through sponsorship, mentorship and education. Its first chairperson was Darryl Oakes, MD, who had strong support and collaboration from Past President Christina Mora Mangano, MD. WICTA generates a quarterly Newsletter that describes its ever-expanding activities.
