Dr. Joel Kaplan


Dr Joel Kaplan is a world-renowned pioneer in cardiothoracic anesthesiology. His contributions as a scholar, educator, mentor & leader have helped to define the specialty globally.
His professional journey has included leadership roles such as Division Chief of cardiothoracic anesthesiology at Emory University, Anesthesiology Chair at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, & Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville. He has also served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. Through his ongoing service in this Society and across the specialty, he has championed excellence, including the successful evolution of the Kaplan Leadership Development Award.
Dr Kaplan is also the founding editor and current Editor- in- Chief of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, a leading peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing perioperative cardiothoracic and vascular practice worldwide. His definitive textbook, Kaplan’s Cardiac Anesthesia, is currently in its 8th edition and is considered the global gold standard for cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
